IAF aircraft to carry out landings on multiple highways

The (Indian Air Force) IAF aircraft will conduct landing and take-off operations at various sites, including highways in Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir as part of its exercise Gaganshakti, defence officials said on Tuesday.

The aircraft operations will showcase the growing infrastructure prowess of the country, they said, adding that highway stretches are being planned to stretch from where emergency operations can be carried out.

Notably, the three defence services have been developing their capabilities to use dual-use infrastructure in partnership with the Road Transport Ministry.

Earlier, similar missions were conducted in Rajasthan’s Barmer, where the transport and fighter assets of the IAF landed on a stretch of highway.

These road stretches can be very useful in case there is a disaster in a nearby area and the IAF transport planes and helicopters can reach the closest affected areas and provide support to the local population.

According to defence officials, the IAF has taken multiple steps towards nation-building, like opening up the civil terminal on the Prayagraj Air Force airfield and allowing the dual use of military infrastructure.
