The Government of South Korea recently approved a plan for long-range missile defense system development.
It will be undertaking the development of long-range surface-to-air missile (L-SAM) II from 2024-2035. The country’s Defense Project Promotion Committee (DPPC) has already approved funding of $2.02 Billion for the development of the L-SAM II.
The missile system will be developed by the South Korean Defense Development Agency (ADD) in partnership with LIG Nex1, a local aerospace manufacturer. The new interceptor will be aimed primarily at destroying North Korea’s hypersonic and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).
Besides, the South Korean Government’s Defense Project Promotion Committee also endorsed the development of the mid-range surface-to-air missile (M-SAM) Block-III system for $2.10 Billion. The system is expected to be ready by 2034.
About L-SAM
The system is expected to have three times the range of the South Korea’s L-SAM missile defense system which is currently under development, and is scheduled for deployment by 2027.
The L-SAM is expected to have a range of 150 kilometers (93 miles) and an altitude of 40 to 100 kilometers (25 to 62 miles).
